Meeting 27-03-2026: Bill Lockley from our science group gave us a very interesting talk titled, "Insects and spiders: Our long distant cousins and our resident aliens".
The presentation was very wide ranging as can be seen from the summary below:
We share our world with species far, far, older than ours. These are the insects and spiders. Just what are they, how did they arise and why are they so stunningly varied? Why do we react so strongly to them? What dangers do they represent? What are the evolved super-powers which make them so successful. Why is it so difficult to live with them and so difficult to live without them? How do we benefit from their properties and activities? How do such small brains work to provide intelligent behaviour? Do they have a first-person view of the world? Can they be said to have a mind? Might they have goals, feelings and emotions? Could we be sharing the world with millions of tiny minds?
Meeting 31-01-2025: Climate Code Red - Alan Simpson
Alan has provided an article he has written The egos have landed which covers many of the issues he discussed at the meeting. Since Alan was until recently MP for Nottingham South the article contains a lot of political opinions that you may or may not agree with. However, the central theme that the world desperately needs to make far better use of our major supplier of energy, the sun, if a climate catastrophe is to be avoided is very much in line with the main points that were discussed.
